We’re now in the heart of summer (August 2025) and the olive trees have begun to show us how the season is going. You may remember that last year, we struggled with extreme heat and very dry soil due to almost no rainfall.

This year, our greatest threat is the olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae) — a tiny insect with a massive impact. It lays eggs inside the olive, triggering oxidation and deteriorating the oil’s quality day by day.

What Does the Olive Fruit Fly Do?

The fruit fly bites into the olive to lay eggs, and the resulting larvae feed inside the fruit. This causes:

Higher acidity in the oil,
Shorter shelf life,
Degradation of flavor and aroma,
And ultimately, lower quality extra virgin olive oil.

Natural Olive Fruit Fly Control (No Chemicals)

At Yapapi, we don’t use chemical pesticides. Instead, we follow natural, sustainable practices to protect our trees while respecting nature and the purity of the oil.

1. DIY Traps with Vinegar or Ammonia

Create homemade traps using plastic bottles with small holes, filled with vinegar and a drop of dish soap or diluted ammonia. These attract and trap the flies without harming beneficial insects.

2. Prune for Air and Light Circulation

Proper pruning allows sunlight and fresh air to reach the interior of the tree, making it less hospitable for pests and easier to inspect.

3. Harvest Olives Early

If conditions allow, consider harvesting earlier than usual. The longer olives stay on the tree, the more vulnerable they are to infestations.

4. Monitor Frequently

Check your olives regularly for signs of damage: small holes, discoloration, or soft spots. Early detection can help you stop a small problem before it grows.

Βρισκόμαστε πλέον στην καρδιά του καλοκαιριού (Αύγουστος 2025) και οι ελιές αρχίζουν να μας δείχνουν πώς εξελίσσεται η φετινή σεζόν. Ίσως θυμάστε ότι πέρυσι αντιμετωπίσαμε έντονη ζέστη και πολύ ξηρό έδαφος, λόγω της σχεδόν μηδενικής βροχόπτωσης.

Φέτος, η μεγαλύτερη απειλή για τα δέντρα μας είναι ο ελαιοκάρπος δάκος (Bactrocera oleae) — ένα μικρό έντομο με τεράστιο αντίκτυπο. Γεννά τα αυγά του μέσα στον ελαιόκαρπο, προκαλώντας οξείδωση και σταδιακή υποβάθμιση της ποιότητας του ελαιόλαδου.

Τι προκαλεί ο δάκος στην ελιά;

Ο δάκος τρυπά την ελιά για να ωοτοκήσει, και οι προνύμφες που εκκολάπτονται τρέφονται από το εσωτερικό του καρπού. Αυτό προκαλεί:

Αύξηση της οξύτητας του λαδιού,
Μείωση της διάρκειας ζωής,
Αλλοίωση της γεύσης και του αρώματος,
Και τελικά, χαμηλότερη ποιότητα στο εξαιρετικά παρθένο ελαιόλαδο.

Φυσική Αντιμετώπιση του Δάκου (Χωρίς Χημικά)

Στο Yapapi, δεν χρησιμοποιούμε χημικά εντομοκτόνα. Αντίθετα, εφαρμόζουμε φυσικές και βιώσιμες πρακτικές για να προστατεύσουμε τα δέντρα μας, σεβόμενοι τη φύση και την καθαρότητα του προϊόντος μας.

1. Χειροποίητες Παγίδες με Ξύδι ή Αμμωνία

Φτιάξτε παγίδες χρησιμοποιώντας πλαστικά μπουκάλια με μικρές τρύπες, γεμάτα με ξύδι και λίγο σαπούνι ή αραιωμένη αμμωνία. Αυτές προσελκύουν και παγιδεύουν τους δάκους χωρίς να βλάπτουν ωφέλιμα έντομα.

2. Κλάδεμα για Φως και Αερισμό

Το σωστό κλάδεμα επιτρέπει στον ήλιο και τον αέρα να διεισδύσουν στο εσωτερικό του δέντρου, καθιστώντας το περιβάλλον λιγότερο φιλόξενο για τα έντομα και πιο εύκολο για επιθεώρηση.

3. Πρώιμη Συγκομιδή

Αν το επιτρέπουν οι συνθήκες, σκεφτείτε να μαζέψετε τις ελιές νωρίτερα. Όσο περισσότερο μένουν πάνω στο δέντρο, τόσο πιο εκτεθειμένες είναι στον δάκο.

4. Συχνή Παρακολούθηση

Ελέγχετε τακτικά τους καρπούς για σημάδια προσβολής: μικρές τρύπες, αλλαγή χρώματος ή μαλάκωμα. Η έγκαιρη διάγνωση βοηθά στην άμεση αντιμετώπιση.

5. Φυτικά Σκευάσματα Εντομοαπώθησης

Υπάρχουν φιλικά προς το περιβάλλον σκευάσματα με φυτικά εκχυλίσματα, τα οποία απωθούν τον δάκο χωρίς χημικά κατάλοιπα και χωρίς να αλλοιώνουν το φυσικό προφίλ του ελαιολάδου.
